“What’s that big old sailboat doing here?”

lady washington crewThat’s the tall ship Lady Washington from the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority out of Aberdeen, Washington and she’ll be docked outside Sub Sea Tours in the 600 block of Embarcadero Street, until the 24th. If you’re in town, and you’ve ever wanted to see what life was like in the 18th century, in the thick of the Pacific Coast fur trade, this is your chance. There’s one of three ways to do it. If you’re a student, K-12, three educational classes: “Life of a Sailor”; “Life of an Officer”; or “Early Trade”. are being offered.  Group reservations can be made at 800-200-5239. The second way is to take a walk-on tour. On the first two days they’re from 4pm to 5pm and on the final two days they’re from 10am to 1pm. The tours are free but a $3 donation is appreciated. The third way is the $39 Adventure Sail on the 23rd and this is your chance to really get a taste for 18th century tall-ship life. You’ll be aboard as the Lady Washington sails out into the harbor and, weather permitting, have the opportunity to man the helm and raise a sail (click here for tickets). Even if you just go down for a look at the Lady Washington, make sure to say hi to Captain James McClurg, who looks forward to coming to Morro Bay every year, almost as much as Morro Bay looks forward to the arrival of the tall ships. “The beauty and friendliness of Morro Bay alone,” Captain McClurg says, “is worth the trip.”
